Species Strategy
Three Species. One Strategy.
MarillionEx deploys a scientifically designed mixed plantation — 40% Fever Tree / 30% Albizia / 30% Teak — optimised to deliver compliance fuel, carbon income, and premium timber across a 30-year cycle.
Vachellia xanthophloea
The Fever Tree
The Coppice & Carbon Engine
- Triple regrowth on coppicing — 5–10 heavy stems replace each cut stem within 18 months
- Nitrogen-fixing root system restores tobacco-depleted soils
- Wood density: 532 kg/m³ | Calorific value: 18.4 kJ/g — superior to most exotics for barn curing
- Carbon sequestration: 5.4 tCO₂/ha/year — Gold Standard eligible from Year 3
- Three coppice cycles (Y4, Y8, Y12) supply fuel + biochar feedstock
- Riparian species — regulates water cycle rather than depleting it (unlike Eucalyptus)
- Year 15 clearfell: 280 stems/ha | 15.4 m³/ha | $380/m³ | $5,852/ha
"The Fever Tree is the only indigenous species that simultaneously delivers fuel compliance, soil restoration, and Gold Standard carbon credits — with none of the ecological damage of Eucalyptus."
Albizia antunesiana
Albizia
The Productive Middle Layer
- Rapid early canopy growth (2–3 m/yr) suppresses weeds and protects Teak seedlings
- Air-dried density: 640–790 kg/m³ — premium fuel wood for KCC1 and advanced barn technology
- Selective thinning at Year 8 opens canopy for Teak while generating first timber income
- Excellent nitrogen fixer — complements Fever Tree soil restoration
- Year 15 clearfell: 180 stems/ha | 18.0 m³/ha | $460/m³ | $8,280/ha
"Albizia is the workhorse — fast early growth protects the plantation, provides fuel during the compliance period, and produces structural-grade construction timber at harvest."
Tectona grandis
Teak
The Pension Asset
- One of the world's most commercially valuable hardwoods
- Market price: $800–$1,200/m³ at 15 years, rising to $2,000–$4,000/m³ at 25+ years
- Global Teak prices have appreciated 6–8% per year for 20 years
- Zimbabwe's climate (MAT 18–26°C, well-defined wet/dry seasons, red soils) is rated highly suitable
- Drought-resistant once established — lowest management risk of the three species
- Selective thinning at Year 10 — early premium hardwood income
- Year 15 clearfell: 180 stems/ha | 17.1 m³/ha | $920/m³ | $15,732/ha
- Teak alone generates 52% of total Year 15 gross timber value
"Teak is the pension. At Year 15 structural grade, it already commands 2.5× Albizia pricing. Left to Year 25–30 in a second cycle, Teak values can reach $4,000/m³ — making the second harvest significantly more valuable than the first."
The High-Density Production Configuration
MarillionEx deploys 1,666 trees per hectare (3m × 2m spacing) for maximum biomass productivity and rapid canopy establishment. Progressive thinning to approximately 640 stems/ha by Year 15 optimises retained timber quality and individual stem volume.
| Year | Activity | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Y0 | Land preparation, nursery supply, establishment | 1,666 stems/ha planted |
| Y1–Y2 | GIS baseline, early management, survival monitoring | Management fees; ESG baseline |
| Y3 | Carbon registration (Verra/Gold Standard) | ARR credits begin |
| Y4 | Fever Tree Coppice 1 + biochar production | Fuel supply; BCR credits commence |
| Y5–Y6 | Full carbon + biochar income | Self-funding threshold reached |
| Y8 | Albizia selective thinning + FT Coppice 2 | First timber income; second fuel cycle |
| Y10 | Teak selective thinning | Early Teak income; canopy optimisation |
| Y12 | FT Coppice 3 — final fuel cycle | Last coppice before clearfell |
| Y14 | Timber Asset Valuation Report | Buyer contracts negotiated |
| Y15 | CLEARFELL ALL SPECIES | $29,864/ha gross; $21,532/ha net |
| Y16 | Replanting from proceeds | Second 30-year cycle begins |
Why We Plant Indigenous — Not Eucalyptus
The choice of species is not aesthetic — it is financial, ecological, and commercial.
| Factor | Eucalyptus (Gum) | MarillionEx Indigenous Mix |
|---|---|---|
| Water impact | Depletes water table; kills surrounding vegetation | Fever Tree is riparian — regulates water cycle |
| Soil impact | Acidifies soil; no nitrogen fixation | Both Fever Tree and Albizia fix nitrogen — restores soil |
| Fire risk | Highly flammable; oil-rich bark | Low flammability; managed fire guards |
| Coppicing | Limited regrowth; replanting required | Fever Tree: 5–10 stems per coppice cut |
| Carbon credits | Limited eligibility; ecological concerns | Gold Standard eligible; ARR + BCR |
| Biodiversity | Monoculture; suppresses biodiversity | Mixed species; wildlife habitat creation |
| Timber value at Y15 | $200–$350/m³ (commodity pulp) | $380–$920/m³ (structural to premium hardwood) |
| Community benefit | None | Biochar distributed free to 130,000 smallholders |
